Reinsurer Swiss Re has confirmed media speculation it is in 'exclusive talks' with a potential buyer for its City of London skyscraper known as the 'Erotic Gherkin' but it stopped short of naming the interested party. 'We expect negotiations to close by early 2007,' Swiss Re said.
UK newspaper Sunday Times reported at the weekend that the Asticus unit of Germany's IVG Immobilien has won the battle to buy the landmark 41-floor building at 30 St Mary Axe for close to £600 mln (EUR 891 mln). The skyscraper comprises 90,000 m2 of office space, with a public a viewing platform at 1,000 feet (305 m). It is the second tallest building in the City of London, after NatWest's Tower 42.
The tower is located at the former site of the historic Baltic Exchange building, which was severely damaged when the Provisional IRA, an Irish Republican paramilitary organisation, detonated a massive bomb in the area in April 2002.
