A brand new stadium for the City of Rotterdam’s football team Feyenoord is at the heart of a major new development scheme for the Dutch port city.
‘The Feyenoord City project will have a sports, lifestyle and health focus, to stimulate place-making and create room for experimental formats,’ said Marco Hoogerbrugge, project manager of the scheme, which will include the biggest football ground in the country.
‘The heart of the project is the development of a new stadium for Feyenoord, but the project is far more ambitious than that,’ added Hans van Rossum, advisor project organisation, Feyenoord City. ‘The total scheme will include around 180,000 m2 of residential, 64,000 m2 of commercial space, 12,000 m2 of leisure – as well as the 70,500 m2 stadium scheme.’
Historically one of Europe’s most significant port cities, Rotterdam is currently undergoing significant redevelopment, this time with an eye on future-proofing the metropolis. ‘We have a history in Rotterdam of developing along the waterfront,’ adds Hoogerbrugge. ‘Those areas are still strategic today, but for different reasons.’
Infrastructure and housing projects in the south of the city are amongst other priorities, as Rotterdam’s liveability and connectivity come under the spotlight. ‘We’re going to create new links over the river, one at the eastern side of Rotterdam, and one in the west. It’s an exciting time.’
